I am starting this blog as a bit of a personal journey. The path is determined by a primal instinct. I was raised in a middle class suburban neighborhood, but my roots were based in the Caribbean. My parents came to the land of opportunity as residents of the commonwealth of Puerto Rico. They hoped to and delivered the dream of raising their children in a manner that was not afforded to them on the island. Their status as "citizens" of this country was questioned by many who were ignorant of the country and it's status. I was absorbed into the new community and as a result lost touch with the past. I am hoping through this blog and contact with others we can all re-discover who we are and where we came from. Being a Latin-American is a blanket thrown over us, however the fabric is diverse. Join me in finding that which makes us unique, and proud. Share thoughts, memories, experiences, and flavors from our heritage. For me the food I was fed as a child fuels the fondest memories of my parents. I am learning to cook those meals from memory. I have no recipes, as my mother seemed to prepare them from some inherent ability. But when I come close, I can still feel her warm embrace and love.
